Studying sparrows at the library this morning.
The weather was so perfect earlier this week that we decided to go out and chronicle the annual event known to a handful of persons as the "Fall Ball". If you've never heard of the Fall Ball, you've probably still enjoyed it. That's the name we minted to describe the different colors worn by each tree species. Today, with the onset of the November rains, marked the end of this year's Fall Ball.
But our chronicling of this gala has just begun... Here's the free activity sheet for download followed by the poem we used to frame our exploration.
THE ANNUAL FALL BALL ACTIVITY (PDF)
A few of the stunning trees attending the Fall Ball this year....
The brittle maroon dress of the flowering dogwood trees....
The frilly yellow tunic of the maple....
And the spectacular golden variety of the sugar maple's heavy gown...
Sometimes we can't find the tree to place the leaf.
A tiny frill of purplish crimson lining the edge of a sleeve...
Milla compares a few fallen dress tatters.
Of course, I wouldn't leave you with a cheat-sheet (though I hope you won't use it). Just know that the cheat sheet is there for emergency use.... Tree ID is much more enriching and fun without taking easy shortcuts.
